Passenger/cargo steamship built for Archibald Currie & Co's Australian and Indian Line, Melbourne in 1910. Employed on the Melbourne - Calcutta run she carried Australian Brumbies north and Indian produce and exotic animals on the southern run.

Mr. Minchin, of the Adelaide Zoological Gardens, made a few purchases from the "exotic" section of Janus's cargo, among which were three tragopans, fabulous Ethiopian birds, and one of the several species of the Asiatic pheasants of the genus ceriornis. They are brilliantly coloured with a variety of tints. He also obtained a cage full of small finches, four college pheasants, and about a dozen partridges.

20.09.1912 - Sailed Sydney for Newcastle.

   
  Messrs. A. Currie and Company's latest steamer, the, Janus, which was built especially for- the Calcutta service, and also fitted up for the carriage of stock, will leave Sydney early tomorrow morning (20.09.1912) for Newcastle to take, in a quantity of coal. Aftter which she will proceed to Melbourne to start loading horses for Calcutta, thence to Sydney, Newcastle, Pinkenba (Brisbane), and Gladstone, where further horses will be loaded, and by the time the Janus leaves the last named port she will have no less than 600 horses, which will be the largest shipment to leave the Commonwealth for some years, and probably a record for the Currie Line.
